The Department of Early Childhood Music is currently accepting applications for an instructor to teach Infant/Toddler & Preschool music classes at VCM community sites around Greater Victoria including the Westshore.

As a member of the Conservatory’s faculty, the successful applicant will be an integral part of the growth and success of the Dept of Early Childhood Music and must be passionate about bringing positive change to the community.  All faculty are independently contracted as service providers and paid hourly according to established fee grid.  The Conservatory’s Early Childhood Music programming is in high demand and offers instructors the opportunity to build out their teaching with the Conservatory as desired while maintaining a healthy work/life balance.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Musical proficiency in vocal, instrumental, and musicianship areas relevant to leading music activities for young children (infants to 5 years).
  • Familiarity with age-appropriate music repertoire and musical activities.
  • Creative and innovative approaches to teaching music to young children.
  • Able to design structured music classes on specific themes with sequential musical activities using a wide range of instruments appropriate for this age group.
  • Able to sing in a pitch range and volume appropriate for young children, in small to large groups.
  • Effectively interact and communicate with children, parents, and staff at each community site.
  • A well organized, punctual, and professional individual, with an enthusiastic, energetic, as well as sensitive and respectful disposition.

Required Experience:

  • At least two years’ experience working with young children in daycare and/or preschool setting and/or experience teaching music to younger grades (K-3) in Elementary school.
  • Experience teaching music classes in small and large groups (4 to 20 children per group).

Salary & Benefits:

Compensation: Paid monthly according to hours submitted, using the Conservatory’s established pay rates for in-community teaching, currently at $44.90 plus mileage as per Conservatory rates for program delivery at community sites.

Additional Information:

  • Valid BC Driver’s License and access to own transportation to travel to Conservatory community sites with portable Early Childhood instrument sets for use in classes (similar to medium-sized suitcase).
