UBC's settings for children are located on the traditional ancestral homelands of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people, surrounded by the Pacific Spirit forest, the academic world, and the residential neighbourhoods. The forest and the land influences pedagogy. The acknowledgement of the location on the traditional xʷməθkʷəy̓əm ancestral homelands creates space and opportunities for education and awareness in support of the calls from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. UBC's Early Childhood Educators walk beside an Indigenous Engagement Relations Pedagogist as they bring forward Indigenous knowledges, truths and histories into their early care and learning environments. With Canada’s youngest citizens growing up in British Columbia within a context of changing Indigenous and non-Indigenous relations, UBC's Early Childhood Educators recognize that they are critical in promoting and bringing forward conversations about healing and social justice. Engagement with the Early Childhood Pedagogy Network further enriches, deepens and challenges UBCCCS's pedagogies and ways of thinking, being and becoming.
