The Program

Best Choices – The Ethical Journey program supports Early Care and Learning professionals to think and reflect deeper about the relationships they have with young children. The quality of the interactions between young children, families and early childhood educators has a significant, enduring impact on a children’s lives. The intimacy of the relationship and the potential that exists to enhance or do harm call for a commitment on the part of early childhood educators to the highest standards of ethical practice. ECEBC recognizes it’s responsibility to promote ethical practice and attitudes on the part of Early Care and Learning professionals. This four-part series guides participants on a journey of ethical discovery and awareness. Participants will have the opportunity to explore personal values, beliefs and assumptions, and examine complexities in ethical decision making.

In 2019, ECEBC received funding from the Ministry for Children and Family Development to review and update the ECEBC Code of Ethics and Best Choices. The updated training reflects the many changes in early care and learning over the past decades. We are also happy to announce that we have developed an online version of the training, allowing increased access for professionals from across the province.

Training Series Modules

Both face to face and online training is divided into four modules, which focus on the four key areas that impact ethical practice in early childhood education.

Module 1 is about self-awareness, which is key to ethical practice in ECE and our ethical behaviour in general.

Module 2 focuses on the essential skill set (thinking skills) needed to put ethical principles into action: observation and interpretation, verification of knowledge and facts, and impartiality without prejudice. These skills are used in both daily practice and when making decisions if principles conflict or there is an ethical dilemma.

Module 3 examines the principles in the ECEBC Code of Ethics. Participants will learn what they mean, what they look like in practice, and how to use them to guide daily practice and make decisions when faced with dilemmas.

Module 4 focuses on the final key area: taking action. Ethical practice in early childhood education requires putting the principles into action every day.

Upcoming Intake Dates:

The course is a combination of self-paced online modules and virtual "face to face" calls between participants and a Best Choices Guide.

The mandatory calls are held weekly from 6:30pm to 8:30pm starting with the first day in each cohort. Find out more and register on the BC Early Years Professional Development Hub.
